This post has been a long time coming! I am pretty sure that by now you know that I obsessed with matte lipsticks. For me, it is about the lasting power and the pigmentation. You just don’t get the same with glossy finish lipsticks, even though they look good but they just do not last as long. There are so many matte liquid lipsticks available in the market. Currently liquid lipsticks are all the rage and I for one think they are fabulous. So over the past few months I have been trying out quite a few different matte liquid lipsticks, bringing you my battle of the liquid matte lipsticks.
I’m going to kick this off with the NYX Liquid suede. I think there packaging is ok, it’s not luxurious but gives you a good indication of the shade inside. It also seems like you get quite a bit of product for £6.50. The finishing is supposed to be more of a sheer stain which generally does not work for me as I like a lot of pigment. On its own it is quite sheer but with a lip liner underneath or another long lasting stain I think this lasts well. It is not drying at all and a big bonus is that it does not flake off. I definitely prefer the darker shades in this range.
The W7 matte lip cream is a lovely Kim K nude peach, I love the shade. It is a little more pigmented that the NYX Liquid suede but other than that they have a very similar consistency. I would say they last about 3-4 hours, can withstand some drinking but not a lot of eating. I feel like this W7 matte lip cream is a little bit drying but again it does not flake off. For around £7 it’s good but I don’t think this brand is very accessible in the UK.
The Instagram images for Anastasia Beverley Hills just makes you want them all! This is definitely a brand which makes me wish more than ever that we had Sephora in the UK, like now! I love the packaging, it is very luxury and they are not cheap at $20 each. I love the smooth and very pigmented application of these. The formulation is not drying at all. It is long lasting but not the most long lasting, you also need to be very careful about eating and drinking. I would say it lasts 3-4 hours and the most which is fine if you are going out for a few drinks.
Speaking of Sephora, I love the Sephora lip stain. It is very affordable at $14 and the packaging is simple but still looks good. There is some variance in the shades, I use Marvelous Mauve which I cannot fault. It glides on smoothly, dries quickly without feeling dry and you literally forget you are wearing anything on your lips. The Sephora lip stain has complete lasting power, I put this own at around 7am and at 2pm after lunch it’s still going strong. When I get home at 6pm it’s still there! It may have rub off slightly depending on what I have eaten. What I love about this is that you can simply apply it on top, it doesn’t form a strange consistency or flake off. I do have a red one which is more sheer and not as great but next time I am in Sephora I will be searching for the perfect red! This liquid lipstick is so under rated!
One liquid lipstick that I wanted for soooo long and is only really available in the US is from a brand called Girlakik. I absolutely love the shade Starlet, it’s a pinky nude with more of a pink to it. The formulation is lightweight and well pigmented. The Girlaktik lip paint stains your lips so the colour does stay well, I would say a good 5-6 hours but this product is not buildable. If you try to reapply after lunch then it starts to flake off and generally go a bit lumpy on your lips which is not a good look.
With almost every makeup brand launching liquid lipsticks I was just waiting for Smashbox to announce the launch of theirs. I love the packaging of these, square rather than round which is the brand’s point of difference. These have a really smooth application and are quick drying. The formulation is probably the most similar to the Sephora lip stain. The Smashbox Liquid Matte lipsticks have ultimate staying power, I am so impressed just as I knew I would be.
I have raved on and on about the Bourjois Rouge Velvet edition lipsticks on my blog and in person but they are truly amazing! For just £8.99 you have a velvet Matte finish which lasts and lasts and you can just keep reapplying and the consistency will stay the same. I prefer the shade offering of Sephora and Smashbox but for a drugstore product the Bourjois Rouge Velvet Edition lipsticks are truly amazing.
I have reviewed the Maybellibe Vivid Mattes already. I love the shades and the packaging but what upset me the most about these are that they are not matte! The colour pay off is good and so is the product texture but it is just not a matte liquid lipstick.
Oh the excitement when Huda Kattan announced the launch of her Liquid Matte lipsticks! The packaging is like every beauty bloggers’ dream! The pout colours on the packaging also match the shades so well. These apply well but do feel a bit drying and after a couple of hours they start to flake off. I was so disappointed, you can see my full review here soon, but for £18 plus waiting time and delivery charges I just did not think these were worth the hype. I really wanted to be one of the many beauty bloggers who have nothing but praise for these but for me these just didn’t work. Maybe I am more of a drugstore girl.
So there are many good Liquid Matte lipsticks here. My favourite three would have to be Sephora, Smashbox and Bourjois and out of them three it is so hard to choose but I would probably go for the Sephora lip stain purely for the price and shade offering. For a good UK drugstore I would definitely recommend the Bourjois Rouge Velvet Edition lipsticks. Are you addicted to matte lipsticks?
