Yves Saint Lauren once said ‘A woman is seductive wearing trousers only if she wears them with all her femininity’ this is true for one of the biggest trends for this Spring/Summer. Wearing trousers as a fashion statement did not really become the norm until the 1970s and since then, like most trends, every now and then it comes back with a new take on the trend. This year it is all about the power of wearing a suit, whether it’s for work, a formal occasion and even on the red carpet for some celebrities.
Tailored suits were on almost every catwalk show for Spring/Summer 2013, Balmain, Victoria Beckham, Yves Saint Lauren and Ralph Lauren could not get enough of this trend. Balmain went for the bold shoulder look, whilst Ralph Lauren and Dior kept it sleek with tailored trousers and high heels. Victoria Beckham’s tailoring oozed with sex appeal as models mixed masculine suit trousers with sexy bra tops.
From catwalk to the red carpet, celebrities such as Rita Ora, Kate Moss and designer duo Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have all embraced this trend not to mention Victoria Beckham who opted for sharp tailoring teamed with killer heels for the launch of the Spice Girls musical, Viva Forever. Stella McCartney is never shy of a tailored suit either and let us not forget where our love for this look really started, in the Sex and the City movie when Carrie teams crisp white tailored trousers and a waist-coat with a pink pinstripe shirt and loose black tie, adding an intricate brooch and black peep toes for that feminine touch.
Masculine tailoring is an effortlessly chic look, tailored trousers always look smart and you can never go wrong with a simple blazer. However, there is a fine line between effortlessly chic masculine tailoring and simply looking like a man. Appropriate male silhouettes and make them your own; this look can be given a feminine touch with an unstructured blouse, heels, statement jewellery and even a bold lip colour. Accessories should be kept to a minimum but bold colour teams up with this look well; red hot heels with matching lips or perhaps even bringing in the monochrome trend a la Ralph Lauren and Balmain by adding a waist cinching belt, pinstripe and all over abstract prints. This differentiates this from others as the look strikes a balance between masculine and feminine, giving sharp tailoring an uplift in sex appeal ♥
Let’s take a look at some of the great fashion forward celebs who have embraced the trend this season ♥
