You may have picked up on my many hints in recent posts that monochrome is a key trend for Spring Summer 2013. This forthcoming season is all about the art of contrast, whether it’s back to basics with effortlessly chic black and white or checkerboard 60s prints a la Louis Vuitton. inspiration from the 60s, 80s and 90s are all viable for this trend and designers such as Marc Jacobs, Jill Sanders, Giles, Phillip Lim and Miu Miu have embraced the contrast effect. We’ve already seen this look with Louis Vuitton, DKNY and Elizabeth and James in previous posts.

This is an effortless look and trend to wear and have fun with, it’s about using contrast, bold prints and mixing black, white and lighter tones. It doesn’t just mean black and white, but as they are wardrobe staples for everyone and give an instant look of sophistication why not! Black and White can be playful and eye-catching and still look pristine and cutting-edge. This is a great look to incorporate with another top trend this season which is masculine tailoring (I hear you calling, another post coming up!)

Marc Jacobs has been almost as obsessed as me with monochrome this season, with bold stripes for the Marc Jacobs show and checkerboard mania for Louis Vuitton, he is definitely making a monochrome statement. The Marc Jacobs campaign reflects the monochrome obsession using mirrors for a model in a prism effect.

It’s not only Marc Jacobs, when Roland Mouret was asked by Elle magazine what to expect from his show in Pairs last year he answered, ‘You know what to expect. What else is there but black and white? Is there anything else this season?’

Don’t forget about using contrasting accessories to break up your fully black ensemble, belts, scarves, sunglasses and statement jewellery all add instant glamour to an outfit.

The monochrome trend doesn’t stop there; it’s perfect for home decor and wedding style too…watch this space ♥
