Wedding Style ♥ Most Memorable Movie and Television Wedding Dresses

Sex and the City Movie

It is the season for bridal dress fittings and thinking about that perfect wedding dress. So for some great inspiration and to reminisce some of the most popular fairy-tale like weddings of all time; let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at some of the best wedding dresses from television and our favourite movies ♥

There are a couple of iconic gowns from the 50s, the actual films we may not remember but the dress styles are legendary as are the stars wearing them and they changed the relationship between Fashion and film.  The film, It Happened One Night from 1934 starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert featured a beautiful satin bias cut gown with a dramatic veil that floats above Claudette Colbert’s feet designed by Robert Kalloch. Then there’s two gorgeous gowns worn by screen legend, Audrey Hepburn; one for the film Funny Face in 1957,  where Audrey Hepburn wears a mid-length ballerina inspired dress. There is also the monochrome Givenchy gown that Audrey Hepburn wore in the 1954 film Sabrina, with black under-veiling  and black floral embroidery this dress is so modern.

In 1957, The Prince and the Showgirl starring Marilyn Monroe, showed the actress wearing a very modern bodycon wedding dress design with white beading and a sweetheart neckline. Moving onto the 60s, in The Sound of Music Julie Andrews wears a very classic long sleeves gown and an enormous veil which created a memorable scene as she walked down the aisle. It may not be the most sought after dress anymore but back in the 80s the wedding of Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell was huge, in Neighbours. Every teenage girl who watched the Australian soap wanted to be Kylie Minogue’s character at that time.

The modern-day fairytale, which could happen…Enchanted. Amy Adams wore a huge typically Princess-like wedding gown with puffed sleeves and layers upon layers of fabric for Giselle to run around on the streets of New York. Jennifer Garner wore a gorgeous wedding gown in the Ghosts of Girlfriends Past designed by Manuel Mota and in The Hangover; amongst all that was going on I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful gown that actress Sasha Barrese was wearing designed by Amsale Tylor. The dress has a gorgeous corsage and sash on the waistband, pleating on the bust and was a feature at the Amsale Tylor bridal show.

‘You don’t alter Vera to fit you, you alter yourself to fit Vera!’

In 2009, Bride Wars was going to be a film with great wedding inspiration. Vera Wang is a friend of most celebrities and the go to designer for bridal wear in the movies too. ‘You don’t alter Vera to fit you, you alter yourself to fit Vera!’ an infamous quote from Kate Hudson’s character in the film. Both Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson wore Vera Wang bridal gowns in this feel good movie. When Charlotte married Trey in Sex and the City, Vera Wang was the designer choice not only for the bride but for the lucky bridesmaids as well. Of course, designer heels were creations by Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin. Another fashion lovers sitcom was Ugly Betty and a memorable moment when Vanessa Williams’ character walked down the aisle in another Vera Wang classic.

If we’re talking sitcoms, I can’t leave out Desperate Housewives, there was so many weddings! Bree got married at least 3 times, Susan twice to Mike and Gabby’s glamorous wedding that didn’t last very long at all. Whether it was a grand affair or an intimate surprise wedding for Mike and Susan (the first time) the dresses were all amazing. Then there’s Friends and the weddings that we actually felt like we were part of. When Monica married Chandler she wore a dress by House of Bianchi, the dress was perfectly styled for Monica; clean cut, no fuss, elegant and classic. Phoebe’s wedding dress was relatively normal considering her kooky character, but the slight silver tone of the dress gave it Phoebe’s edge.

Back to the movies, Amanda Seyfried’s character in Mamma Mia wore a dress made by Oscar-winning costume designer Ann Roth. People were desperate to know who the designer for this dress was wanting one for themselves. She may not have got married in Friends, although she entered the first ever episode in a wedding dress; but Jennifer Aniston sure did make a stunning and simple bride in the film Marley and Me with a dress from Carolina Boulton Couture.

One of the most romantic wedding sets was from the Twlight Saga: Breaking Dawn, the beautiful outdoor garden wedding with admirable white flowers swarming the wedding guests. Bella wore a Caroline Herrera dress which looked simple like the character from the front but the back showed intricate lace detailing and small coveted buttons.

Saving the best until last, ok maybe not the best dress but the best wedding dress story. The bride-to-be does a photo shoot with for Vogue featuring some of the most top designers including Vera Wang of course, Caroline Herrera, Lanvin and Christian Lacroix. Then a few days later Vivienne Westwood herself sends the bride a beautifully gift wrapped bridal gown with a personal note saying the dress was made for her! Yes, while watching that moment in the Sex and the City Movie I think many of us hoped Vivienne Westwood or any other designer would do the same for us. Obviously not what happened to Carrie on her wedding day wearing that dress though… ♥
